23m Christians in China
CHINA has nearly 23 million Christians, 1.8 percent of the country's population, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said in a report released yesterday.
Its survey covered 31 provincial areas between 2008 and 2009.
Female Christian outnumbered their male counterparts by a large margin. Nearly 69.1 percent of Christians were women, yesterday's Beijing Evening News reported.
More than 60 percent of Christians were between 35 and 64, with people over 65 making up 25.7 percent of believers.
Fewer than 10 percent of Christians were in the 14 to 34 age range.
Most Christians hadn't received college or higher education with more than half of them having only a primary and high school education background.
More than half of respondents said they became Christians because of sickness suffered by themselves or their relatives, while 15 percent said they were influenced by their family.
Some 46 percent said they mainly got relevant religious information from other Christians and friends, while 44 percent said their family members were their leading source.
The findings showed the majority of China's Christians were in east China and the Yangtze River Delta region.
