24 fall off tilting bridge, no drowning reported

LAST night 24 tourists in Fenghuang Town, central Hunan Province fell into a river when a suspension bridge suddenly slanted to one side, local officials said.

There were nearly 40 people walking on the bridge at about 9pm after a bonfire party when one bridge pier snapped under heavy weight, causing wooden planks to tilt, town officials said.

Twenty-four people tumbled into the river which is about 1 meter to 1.2 meters deep, and they were all pulled to safety and sent to a hospital for examination and treatment. Only two with minor injuries stayed in hospital for further observation.

No one was reported missing after the incident and rescuers had found no drowned person in the river as of 4:30am today.

One witness said the tourists didn't rock the bridge in excitement as earlier reports claimed. Instead, a town official urged them to pass the bridge as soon as possible because the bridge was swaying at that time.

All bonfire parties and other entertainment programs in the town have been suspended for safety check, China News Service reported.
