24 on trial in mafia-like case

A GROUP of 24 people went on trial over charges they joined a mafia-style gang in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, Yangcheng Evening News reported yesterday.

Yuexiu District People's Court heard the case on Monday and did not issue a verdict.

The court heard that since 2009, Cao Huangang and Li Long rounded up several security guards and controlled some night clubs in Guangzhou. In July 2009, Cao and four other security guards set up a company, which they used as a front to swindle money and solicit customers for prostitutes, the report said.

While Li was the head of security at one club, he hid two shotguns, one pistol and 24 bullets there. The weapons and ammunition were later confiscated by police officers, the court was told.

Prosecutors said Cao, Li and two others kidnapped a victim surnamed Ma in November 2009. They beat Ma, withdrew 47,500 yuan (US$7,206) from his bank account and didn't release him until he wrote an IOU, the report said.

The court also heard several gang members assaulted a man, stealing his laptop, smartphone and 200 yuan.

Cao and other alleged gang members created several websites publishing fake recruitment information from November 2009 to April 2010. They swindled 11,333 yuan from candidates in the name of an introduction fee on 10 occasions and Cao forced a woman to have sex with him, the report said.

Both Cao and Li said they were only members of the group and accused the other of being the gang's leader.
