25,000 suspects probed in driveto beat corruption
MORE than 25,000 people were investigated in the first six months of the year as part of a nationwide crackdown on corruption, the country’s top prosecutor said yesterday.
Of the cases pursued, almost 85 percent involved bribes in excess of 50,000 yuan (US$8,000) or embezzlement of 100,000 yuan or more, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate said.
The number of “major cases” probed was 13.7 percent higher than in the first half of last year, it said. Similarly, the number of officials, of county level or above, investigated in the period rose 32 percent from the first six months of 2013 to 1,680.
Investigators also succeeded in locating and returning to China 320 people linked to corruption cases who had fled overseas.
“The SPP will set up a working group to retrieve illicit funds from overseas, enhance its supervision of major cases and build a database of fugitives,” it said.
Xu Jinhui, head of the SPP’s anti-graft bureau, said prosecutors had stepped up their efforts to combat corrupt officials.
In the first half of the year, 4,400 people were investigated for offering bribes, up 38 percent from the same period of last year.
President Xi Jinping has pledged to go after powerful “tigers” as well as lowly “flies” in the crackdown, which has already netted several senior figures, including Xu Caihou, the former vice chairman of the Central Military Commission.
Also in the first half of the year, prosecutors investigated more than 8,000 people suspected of dereliction of duty, the SPP said.
They included 303 officials at or above county level, which represents a year-on-year increase of 21 percent, it said.
Prosecutors also investigated 503 people suspected of criminal activity linked to major accidents, such as the tanker explosion in north China’s Shanxi Province in which 40 people died.
Eight officials were accused of dereliction of duty or abuse of power in relation to the incident.
In the second half of the year, prosecutors will target official misconduct in the areas of food and drug safety, environmental protection and land acquisition, the SPP said.
