26 hurt as Beijing gales wreak havoc
AT least 26 people were injured when Beijing was hit by gales yesterday.
Trees on sidewalks and outdoor billboards shook violently in the strong winds and cyclists and pedestrians stayed off the streets.
The Beijing Emergency Care Center said that it received 26 injured people.
In the morning, glass blown out of a window in a residential building injured a passer-by in Chegongzhuang of Xicheng District.
Later, a tree collapsed on to a bus, injuring five people. Two people were also injured when hit by a billboard and one police box collapsed.
"I felt that I was going to be blown into the air," said Sai Guoshu, a Beijing resident.
"Overturned trash cans, bicycles and fences could be seen everywhere."
Winds exceeded 60 kilometers per hour in the capital's downtown area, the Beijing Meteorological Bureau said.
Rail services on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line suffered delays. By 2:20pm, nine trains had been delayed, the Shanghai Railway Bureau said yesterday.
More than 20 flights were delayed at Beijing Capital International Airport and six others canceled, said an airport spokesperson.
The gales is expected to die down today.
Elsewhere, gale alerts were issued in Anhui, Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi provinces.
Meanwhile, the weather in Shanghai will be warm and sunny this weekend, forecasters said.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said the maximum temperature may reach 17 degrees Celsius and rise to almost 20 degrees next week.
Sunny weather is expected to last until late Wednesday.
