2.75m yuan donated to teacher who saved kids
A TEACHER who risked her life to save two students from an oncoming bus in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province earlier this month has regained consciousness but must wait for the most opportune time to begin surgery, a doctor said yesterday.
"We are making preparations for the surgery, but she is still in critical condition due to previous complications. We cannot be blindly optimistic," said Dr Zhao Mingyan, director of the intensive care unit of the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University.
Zhang Lili, whose legs had to be amputated after she was run over by the bus, yesterday thanked her visitors and those who have donated money to cover her treatment.
On Tuesday, Zhang regained consciousness. Doctors turned off her respirator on Thursday, but warned that she was still in critical condition due to complications, including an infection, bruising and toxin absorption caused by muscle necrosis, Zhao said.
Zhang, a 29-year-old teacher at the No. 19 Middle School in the city of Jiamusi, was crossing the road in front of her school's main gate on the morning of May 8 when she saw a bus barreling toward two students. She ran to the students and pushed them out of the way, but had no time to avoid the bus herself.
A total of 2.75 million yuan (US$434,654) has been donated thus far to cover her treatment, according to a local charity federation.
