28 food smugglers jailed by court at Vietnam border

Smuggling food into China from Vietnam landed 28 people involved with prison terms ranging from 12 months to 12 years when they appeared at a Chinese court near the border yesterday.

In the mass sentencing of a number of separate cases, the Intermediate People’s Court of Fangchenggang City in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, sentenced Zhong Peilian and Wu Wenguo to 12 years in prison and fined them 8 million yuan (US$1.25 million) each.

Zhong and Wu had smuggled more than 10,000 tons of rice across the border, thus evading a tax of 23 million yuan.

Xiang Zaiyi, who was jailed for seven years and fined 500,000 yuan, helped others smuggle 84 million tons of frozen foods including chicken feet and beef between December 2013 and June 2014.

Smuggling is rife in the area, the Fangchenggang court has completed trials of 32 similar cases since the start of 2014. Some 9,600 tons of frozen meat and nearly 20,000 tons of rice, corn and sugar have been confiscated.

In July, China’s food safety watchdog ordered nationwide checks for smuggled meat.
