28 injured as quake shakes up Yunnan

AN earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale shook southwest China's Yunnan Province early yesterday, slightly injuring 28 people and knocking down more than 1,000 homes, authorities said.

The quake struck Binchuan and Xiangyun counties in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture at about 5am.

One of the injured suffered a broken collar bone while the others were left with bruises, said Zhang Yaqin of the provincial health department.

Around 30,000 homes were damaged and more than 430 heads of livestock killed, the Yunnan Provincial Civil Affairs Department said. The direct economic loss was estimated at 6.7 million yuan (US$985,000).

The quake originated at a depth of about 10 kilometers, the National Seismological Network of China said.

Yunnan Province recorded more than 4,000 earthquakes in the first nine months of this year, with 13 temblors measuring from 4.0 to 4.9, 90 from 5.0 to 5.9 and one at 6.0 on the Richter scale, according to the provincial seismological bureau.
