299 government workers apply for cheap homes

QUESTIONS have arisen after 299 government workers were among dependants of families applying for cheap homes in south China's Shenzhen City.

The families have passed the first round of scrutiny and their names are being published by the city government for public comment, today's China.com.cn reported.

But 299 government workers were among dependents of the families applying for cheap homes, and some lived in expensive neighborhoods, the Website added.

Shenzhen Customs had 12 workers on the list, while Futian District Production Safety Bureau followed with 11 workers.

But Shenzhen Customs denied the 12 workers were on their regular payrolls, saying they were temporary employees earning between 2,000 yuan and 3,000 yuan a month, lower than the city's average.

The safety production authority also said the 11 on the list earned 2,000 yuan a month.

As to their expensive homes, some neighborhood committees, which carried out the first-round scrutiny, told the Website that most of the applicants were living in the homes of their friends or relatives.
