2nd chartered flight arrives in Beijing with Libya evacuees
THE second flight chartered by the Chinese government to evacuate its nationals from Libya arrived in Beijing today with 227 Chinese on board.
The Air China Airbus A330-200 took off from Cairo Thursday at 6 p.m.local time (1600 GMT) and arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport at 9:25am (0125 GMT).
The passengers included 218 employees of Sinohydro, a state-owned company involved in construction, engineering, investment and real estate, Sinohydro executive Chang Manxiang told Xinhua.
"We took buses first to the border with Egypt and then to Cairo. From Cairo, we took the flight home. The whole journey lasted more than 30 hours. It was exhausting," said Gong Xuefei, who worked in the Sinohydro office in Benghazi, Libya's second largest city.
Gong said he was very scared at first during the riots in Libya and was very glad to go home. "We appreciate the support and help the Chinese government has offered."
Li Changfu, an employee of China Building Technique Group Co., Ltd., said he was very frightened in Libya and felt excited to be home.
"We all cheered when the cabin crew told us we would land in Beijing soon," Li said.
The first flight chartered by the Chinese government to evacuate its nationals from Libya arrived in Beijing early Friday with more than 200 Chinese.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Song Tao said today 12,000 Chinese nationals had so far been evacuated from Libya.
