2nd man caught in hunt for 3 fugitives

POLICE have recaptured the second of three escapees from a detention center in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province on Tuesday after a guard was killed.

They said they were hard on the heels of the third man, Gao Yulun, after he was spotted near Qingchuan village in Yanshou County yesterday morning.

A search, including a helicopter, is underway, the Huashang Morning Post reported.

Li Haiwei was caught near Yanshou’s Yushan village on Wednesday evening while Wang Daming was seized in Xinsheng village in the early hours of yesterday.

Gao, 50, was being held at the facility while his death penalty for murder was being reviewed. The other two were awaiting sentence — Li, 29, for murder and Wang, 35, for intentional injury.

The three are said to have killed the guard and made their escape from the center near Harbin, the provincial capital, at 4:40am on Tuesday wearing items from the dead guard’s uniform.

A guard near the exit spotted them and became suspicious and fired a warning shot, but the three fled.

The newspaper said the guard who was killed was just a year from retirement after having been in the job for more than 30 years.

After the escape, more than 1,000 armed officers were involved in the manhunt.
