3 Japanese held on drug charges

THREE Japanese men have been detained by police in Zhuhai City of south China's Guangdong Province for alleged drug smuggling.

They were detained on July 17 for allegedly smuggling marijuana and ice drugs, yesterday's Huanqiu.com reported.

The consulate-general of Japan in Guangzhou confirmed the report and said the three men were detained in a same place.

Last month, four Japanese men - three in their 30s and one in his 60s - were detained at a hotel in Shenyang, capital of northeastern China's Liaoning Province for alleged drug smuggling.

In April, four convicted Japanese drug smugglers were executed in China.

Teruo Takeda, Hironori Ukai and Katsuo Mori, were executed in Liaoning on April 9 after being convicted in 2007 in separate cases. Their executions followed that of drug dealer Mitsunobu Akano, 65, on April 6.

Akano was reported to be the first Japanese criminal to be put to death in China since 1972, when the two countries established formal relations.
