3 arrested for attack on Anhui police officer

THE three men who allegedly attacked a police officer and took his gun were arrested today in Tongcheng City, Anhui Province, reported China National Radio.

The three suspects, Xu Meng, Xu Kunming, and Xu Haifeng were arrested when they were sleeping in their shelter at 5am in Taihu County, Tongcheng. The three were car thieves, according to the city's police.

Another suspect Zheng Xiaolei was also arrested. He is suspected of working with the others to steal cars.

They were arrested one day after officers recovered the stolen gun they apparently dropped while fleeing police.

The gun was found 30 hours after the attack took place on June 28.

This is the third case of attacks on police officers in the province this year. On May 12, suspects knocked over a police vehicle with a stolen car and killed two officers in it fearing their theft ring had been exposed.

On June 17, a driver involved in a traffic accident dispute chopped a traffic policeman in the arm with a machete, according to Xinhua news agency.

All of the attackers were arrested, the report said.

According to China's criminal law, those attacking a police officer can be charged with the crime disrupting public service and the crime of intentional injury not leading to a death. Those found guilty of the crimes can be sentenced to a maximum of three years and 10 years in prison respectively.
