3 arrested over killing of giant panda

THREE people have been arrested and seven others questioned in connection with the killing of a giant panda in the wild, China Central Television reported yesterday.

A panda skin was discovered in December along with 9.75 kilograms of meat, four bones and a gallbladder, CCTV reported.

While there is a thriving black market trade in exotic animal parts in China, it is unusual to hear of panda meat being sold.

According to police, the panda was shot by mistake on December 4 by two brothers surnamed Wang in a forest near their home in Yanjin County, southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

When the men discovered they had injured the protected bear, they decided to kill it and sell it as meat, the report said. Later the same day, the brothers sold the panda to a dealer surnamed Li for 4,800 yuan (US$775), a senior detective with the Yunnan forestry police was quoted as saying.

Li then sold the body parts on to two other suspects surnamed Wang and Wu, the report said.

The detective was quoted as saying that the people arrested and questioned were involved in the killing, sale, purchase and transportation of the dead animal.

The giant panda is a protected species in China and anyone found guilty of killing one can face a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a hefty fine. As of the end of 2013, there were 1,864 giant pandas living in the wild in China.
