3 arrests after bulldozer death
A NORTH China village official has been suspended from his post after a woman was crushed to death by a bulldozer in a forced demolition.
However, village authorities described the fatality as an accident.
Victim Meng Jianfen was trying to stop demolition crews from tearing her home down in Zhangjiaying Village of Hebei Province.
Meng's mother, Hu Xifeng, drank pesticide to protest, while her aunt, Hu Qiaofeng, was also severely hurt in the bulldozer crush.
Hu Xifeng was still under treatment in hospital while Hu Qiaofeng was in coma with a leg and pelvic bone smashed, China News Service reported yesterday.
Police in Xingtai City stepped in. The driver of the bulldozer, manager of the demolition project, and Zhangjiaying Party boss Zhang Shengli were arrested.
The tragedy took place on Sunday when bulldozers and demolition crews surrounded nine village houses.
The head of the demolition crew said they were told to tear the villagers' house down because they were "illegal constructions."
The village police station's safety production authority refused to comment.
Protest against forced demolition has become more extreme since Tang Fuzhen, a Chengdu businesswoman, set herself on fire to stop bulldozers from tearing her home down.
Tang died after 16 days of agony and her home was still demolished. Chengdu authorities accused her of violently resisting law enforcement and justified their action by saying Tang's home was an illegal construction.
These controversial evictions have prompted China's lawmakers to draft a new demolition that prohibits authorities from cutting off water and electricity and acting with any violence.
