3 arrests over melamine-laced milk

AUTHORITIES in Shaanxi Province have arrested three men for using 10 tons of melamine-laced milk powder in a dairy company.

Police arrested Zhang Wenxue, 49, and Zhu Shuming, 48, both managers of Shaanxi Lekang Dairy Company yesterday. A 47-year old unemployed native named Ma Shuanglin was also under arrest for selling the raw materials to Lekang.

Xu Qiang, vice head of public security in the north China province, told a press conference today some of the company's tainted products were sent to stores in southern Guangdong and Fujian provinces. Local authorities have recalled the products.

Xu said Ma bought 10 tons of expired milk powder with a high level of melamine that should have been destroyed after the 2008 melamine scandal from another dairy company.

He sold the powder to Lekang Company, who mixed it with normal milk powder and sold it on.

The industrial chemical in milk products was blamed for at least six infants' deaths and over 300,000 others suffering kidney stones in one of the country's most serious food safety scandals in 2008.
