3 beauties called 'ugly,' some say pageant rigged
LIGHTS and make-up were to blame, organizers said, after thousands of people suggested contest rigging, complaining that the winners of a beauty pageant were "ugly."
The three winners of the 52nd Miss International Beauty Pageant contest in southwest China's Chongqing City looked "too unusual," to represent a city widely known for the beauty of its women, netizens said.
"How ugly they looked! If they are representing beauties of Chongqing then I'll be ashamed to be the city's resident," was one comment.
A picture of the winners was forwarded tens of thousands of times on weibo, with one question repeatedly coming up - "Have the women bribed the judges to win the match?"
Lan Rong, organizer of last Friday's competition, told the Hunan Province-based Xiaoxiang Morning Herald that the contest was "absolutely fair" and they would reserve their right to take legal action against anyone spreading rumors.
"We organizers apologize that lights, make-up and styles during the competition may have left regrets to the contestants," said Lan. "We hope netizens can show some understanding and believe in the contestants."
Some have even started to dig out personal information on the three to see whether they are linked to authority figures or rich men. Some in Chongqing took photos of women on the street for purposes of comparison.
Tao Yujie, the third prize winner who came under the heaviest criticism, told the newspaper that she was "very sad to see the online comments." On the Internet, many people were making fun of her eyes and mouth, even copying and pasting them onto celebrities' faces.
The women are to attend the national beauty pageant for the Miss International title later, Lan said.
