3 cops, not 4, killed in shoot-out, police says

POLICE said last night that it was wrongly reported that one more police officer died of wounds in Tuesday's shoot-out in Tai'an City, Shandong Province, adding he was still in a critical condition.

Xiao Bin was on life support machine at No. 88 Army Hospital in Tai'an. Experts from the Third Military Medical University arrived last night to operate on him, Beijing News reported today.

An insurance company has sent 50,000 yuan (US$7,551) in initial payment to the police station where Qi Honghai, one of the three officers killed in the shoot-out, worked.

Police officers and residents in Tai'an City gathered at the site of killing yesterday to mourn the three policemen killed while trying to arrest two murder suspects. Three policemen and two civilians were injured in the chase, the report said.

One suspect, Liu Lumin, turned the gun on himself after they were cornered by the police. The other one, his brother Liu Jianjun, was arrested.

The suspects opened fire at police officers who came to their house to investigate a murder in Shandong's Dezhou City. They fled the apartment and hijacked four vehicles before being blocked by the police.
