3 dead in NW China truck-train collision

Three people were killed yesterday when a truck went off an overpass and collided with a train in northwest China's Qinghai Province, local railway authorities said.

A pickup truck in Wulan County, under Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, lost control, broke through guardrails in an overpass and crashed with a train passing under it at about 8 am, the Qinghai railway bureau said in a statement.

Three people on the truck were dead when rescuers reached the site, it said.

The train, bound for Beijing from Lhasa, stopped there for an hour before train services on the 1,956-km Qinghai-Tibet railway was resumed.

An investigation into the exact cause of the accident is underway.
