3 detained after fatal landslide
THREE people allegedly involved in the illegal mining of rare-earth elements in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were detained after mining activities caused a landslide and buried seven miners, according to the local administration.
Wuzhou City Government said the seven miners were found dead yesterday morning. Investigations continue.
Local mining experts said the miners dug a vertical hole from a hilltop, poured a solvent into it, then dug a horizontal hole from the foot of the hill to harvest the solvent, which by then contained rare-earth elements.
A landslide could be caused by pouring too much solvent into the hill, an expert said.
This is the third serious accident in Guangxi in a matter of days.
A power cut at a tungsten mine in Guilin City resulted in seven deaths from lack of oxygen last Tuesday. One person was injured. The next day, an illegal firework factory in Beihai City exploded, killing five and injuring 10.
