3 detained for lean meat drug

THREE people have been detained for trading in "lean meat powder" in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Police said the men bought the powder on the Internet and sold it to livestock raisers in Ili, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

For the past two years, the business was worth tens of thousands of yuan to the traders, according to the report.

Officials said the lean meat powder trade in Xinjiang has been a persistent problem.

In 2009, two of the suspects, surnamed Chen, from Xinjiang, and Yang, posted details on the Internet, saying that they wanted to purchase the powder, the main ingredient of which is the drug clenbuterol.

They made contact with a man, surnamed Chi, from Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province, who sold the powder to Yang and other dealers.

Yang used some of the powder to feed the cattle he raised and sold the rest.

Police said wider investigations are continuing.

Consumption of pork tainted with clenbuterol can cause nausea, dizziness and tremors. Long-time consumption can lead to cancer, experts say.
