3 detained over Chengdu's water cuts

THREE people have been detained for polluting one of the major drinking water sources of Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, by dumping poisonous garbage that cut water supplies to 12 million people last week.

Liu Decheng, Liu Tao and Li Bo, all residents of Tianma Town in Chengdu's Dujiangyan City, were detained on the charge of endangering public security, China News Service reported, citing Chengdu government officials.

They have confessed to the dumping, the report said.

Chengdu's police found the trio dumped four tons of used plastics and glass residue in Baimu River at Dujangyan's Chongyi Town on April 2, polluting the water.

Chengdu's water authority was forced to cut tap water supply from 6pm that day, affecting 12 million people.

Police are still investigating the source of the garbage.
