3 detained over death
THREE urban management officers of northeast China have been detained for allegedly beating an old man to death after he refused to stop cementing a pathway to his residence.
Ma Chuang, director of the Urban Administrative and Law Enforcement Bureau of Liaoning City in Liaoning Province, said the officers were beaten by Zhou Xiaoming and his son first and Zhou, said to be in his 70s, suddenly fell down dead, yesterday's Legal Daily reported.
But Zhou's wife, Wu Suli, said at least six officers took part in beating her, her husband, their son and their workers on May 3.
She said they had hired workers to cement a short pathway leading to their home so that it wouldn't be slippery. A chief officer, Zhang Song, who passed by in a mini-van, jumped out and called on the workers to stop.
Zhang argued with Zhou after he refused to stop the work, Wu said.
Another six officers suddenly jumped out to beat Zhou and their son, she said.
Zhou, who had had heart bypass surgery, showed his surgery wound to them in an attempt to stop the beating, Wu said.
But one officer hit Zhou twice in the head and he collapsed.
Authorities said they were waiting for an autopsy report before deciding on what further action they should take.
