3 die as restaurant roof collapses
EXCESSIVE roof stacking has apparently caused the collapse of a restaurant in Hangzhou yesterday afternoon, killing three and injuring another two inside, initial investigations suggest.
The 40-square-meter restaurant in north Liangzhu Town, Hangzhou has a brick-and-wood structure, with a cement ceiling. It toppled after the precast ceiling collapsed.
The victims are from a family surnamed Guo that runs the restaurant and the collapse took place at around 2:20pm when the family, five people in total, was in the house.
According to Hangzhou Xiangfu Fire Brigade who conducted a rescue operation, the family's three-year-old son was already dead when they arrived.
The 34-year-old wife and the 57-year-old husband's mother died at Hangzhou No.2 Hospital.
The husband and the 12-year-old son were sent to the same hospital. The man suffered pelvic and spinal bone fractures. Both he and his elder son's vital signs are stable.
The family is from Jiangxi Province and the two boys just arrived days ago for their summer vacation, according to the neighbors.
"I heard a blare, and when I ran out, I could barely see anything but dust and smoke," recalled a grocery owner who only identified himself as Dong. His store is opposite the restaurant.
"As I know, the restaurant owner has removed the house' partition wall secretly, which he should not have done," Dong told Shanghai Daily.
