3 die in school van crash
THREE primary school students died and 13 others were injured after their overloaded van overturned in northern China's Hebei Province yesterday, local officials said.
A primary school teacher drove the van to take 16 students to classes. The van, designed to seat seven people, slipped off a rural road about 7:05am in the Qionglong Manchu autonomous county, county officials said. They said one of the injured was in critical condition.
A string of road accidents involving rural school transportation occurred in China last year. The most serious case happened in November, when 21 students died after their nine-seat minivan, which was crammed with 62 preschoolers, crashed in western China's Gansu Province.
Authorities then announced new safety regulations for school buses.
