3 guards jailed in connection with courthouse bloodshed

THREE security guards in southern Hunan Province were sentenced to three to four years in prison for dereliction of duty that led to three court officials being killed in June 2010, Xinhua reported today.

Zhu Jun, a post office security guard in Lingling District, Yongzhou City broke into the Lingling People's Court on June 1 last year and shot the court staff with a submachine gun and a pistol, killing three and injuring three before turning the gun on himself.

Police believed Zhu shot the court officials as revenge for a court ruling on his housing dispute. Zhu was found with a cancer in 2006 but still worked as a security guard before his shooting rampage.

Subsequent investigation showed poor management of weapons at the security services company. Police said the company's fire arms keeper, Nie Yan, allowed Zhu to take the weapons and ammunitions without following required procedures as he knew Zhu had escort mission.

Nie was sentenced to four years in prison and his two supervisors were sentenced to three years in prison with a three-year reprieve.
