3 held over drowning on 'overcome fear' course
THREE tutors have been held after a company boss on a training course to "overcome his fear" in Guangzhou City, south China's Guangdong Province, drowned after being repeatedly held underwater.
The tutors have been detained by police for accidentally causing the death of the man, surnamed Huang, in May, the Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.
The 40-year-old paid 30,000 yuan (US$4,889) for the training course.
Police said the three men held training sessions promising to help business people control their emotions and improve their performance.
Huang, the boss of a local company, participated in one section of the class designed to "overcome his fear."
In this section, two tutors held Huang underwater in a swimming pool, only allowing him to take air every 30 seconds.
The third tutor, a 37-year-old surnamed Liu who created the training session, counted the time at the side of the pool, directing the others.
The tutors repeatedly pushed Huang into the water despite his desperate struggles to stay above the water, police said.
Liu's training didn't have any protective or first-aid measures and put students' lives in extreme danger, police said.
Established in 2010, the tuition company, Chengzhe Co, was found to be an unlicensed institute without training qualifications.
The company has held about 20 training courses.
