3 hurt in pesticide plant blast

AN explosion rocked a pesticide factory in south China's Nanning City yesterday afternoon, injuring three workers.

The blast occurred at 3:30pm in the Jinsui Pesticide Factory on Yongbin Road, said rescuers.

Fire then engulfed an area of 3,000 square meters and destroyed two warehouses in the capital city of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Firefighters managed to put it out at around 6pm.

Their efforts were hampered by insufficient water supplies and a narrow road leading to the plant.

Firefighters had to drain water from a nearby pond to get enough supplies to enable them to douse the flames. Police evacuated the factory's workers and cordoned off the plant, which has large stores of chemicals.

Two types of harmful gases, formaldehyde and phosphine, were being stored at the plant, said experts with the city's environmental protection bureau.

But they said that the gases were being stored at low concentrations and did not pose a threat to public health. More tests to ensure safety will be carried out.
