3 killed, 14 hurt by blast

THREE people died and another 14 were injured in a blast in a community service center in southwest China's Yunnan Province yesterday, local government officials said.

The explosion occurred at around 9am in Qiaojia County, Zhaotong City.

Four seriously injured people were sent to a hospital in Kunming, the provincial capital, according to the county government.

Police said they are still investigating. Reporters who rushed to the scene claimed that the explosion might have been caused by a bomb.

According to Kunming-based Chuncheng Evening News, a witness said the explosion occurred when a woman, whose house was forcibly demolished by the local government, detonated explosives she had with her.

The woman and two staff workers with local demolition bureau died, a witness said.

The blast followed a controversial demolition operation also in Qiaojia County on April 17 when government officials were accused of beating a villager and dragging him to a government office as they were demolishing his house, which was said to be illegal.

The man, surnamed Ding, was reported to have died.
