3 killed by crane fall

THREE people were killed and five others seriously injured after a tower crane fell from a building under construction in south China's Guangdong Province, local authorities said yesterday.

The accident occurred at 4:10pm on Friday when the 30-tonne tower crane fell from the 50th floor of Taishang Building in Dongguan City.

The crane broke through three stories in the basement before it finally landed, a municipal government spokesman said. Three workers were killed at the scene and the injured were receiving treatment at a local hospital.

The Taishang Building, dubbed as "No. 1 Skyscraper in Dongguan," is expected to be 289 meters tall, with 68 floors above ground and four levels below. The building is funded by Taiwan businessmen.

In another accident, four people were killed and at least six others were injured after a truck loaded with gunpowder exploded yesterday in central China's Hubei Province.

The blast happened just after midnight at a section of the Beijing-Zhuhai Highway in Xiaogan City, a Xiaogan municipal government spokesman said.

The explosion destroyed three vehicles nearby and damaged the road surface.

It also damaged some houses in a nearby village, injuring at least 20 villagers.
