3 lifted from avalanche

THREE people, including a pregnant Uygur woman, were airlifted to safety yesterday after being trapped by deadly avalanches last week in west China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The helicopter evacuations brought the number of people rescued from Hejing County of Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture to more than 400.

Two avalanches in Xinjiang last week killed seven people and trapped hundreds more in Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture and Kunes Town, Hejing County.

Ground rescue efforts since last Thursday have successfully reached many of those trapped and transferred them to safer areas.

"The last three people rescued by helicopter lived in a very remote area that we could not reach on the ground," said Ili Ismail, deputy director of the government office of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, who is also commander-in-chief for rescue operations.

The two helicopters arrived at Hejing County at 3:15pm yesterday, and had evacuated the three by 3:30pm.
