3 officials arrested over deadly Shenzhen fire

Three officials have been arrested over a deadly market fire last month in south China's Shenzhen Municipality, the city's People's Procuratorate announced today.

The fire broke out at 1:26am on December 11 at an agricultural products wholesale market in Gongming Subdistrict of Guangming New District, killing 16 people and injuring five others.

Two officials from the Gongming subdistrict administration office were arrested on suspicion of the crimes of dereliction of duty and bribe-taking, and a third was taken into custody for offering and taking bribes, according to a statement from the Shenzhen People's Procuratorate.

The procuratorate has investigated nine officials in total over the fire, it said.
