3 officials die of gas poisoning in sealed coal mine
Three officials in southwest Sichuan Province died of carbon monoxide poisoning after entering a sealed coal mine without permission.
The three men, identified by surname as Zhang, Chen and Cui, sneaked into an illegal coal mine sealed off by government a long time ago in Huilong Town, Kaijiang County. They had no authorization to investigate, nor were they involved in mine business, Huaxi Metropolitan Daily reported Monday.
Zhang, deputy director of Kaijiang Public Security Bureau, took Chen and Cui, both local radio and television bureau officials, to the coal mine in a police car on Saturday afternoon. They removed the stones blocking the entrance and entered the mine, a witness said, assuming they went there to check illegal mining.
A villager alerted police after the three men failed to come out a few hours later. They were found in the evening, all dead after inhaling carbon monoxide, initial investigation showed.
The county government said they did not order a security check on coal mines and it was Zhang's personal decision to drive a police car to the mine on Saturday.
Official investigation is still going on.
