3 officials sacked over fatal viaduct collapse

THREE officials in central China have been sacked over Sunday's fatal viaduct collapse. Nine others have been arrested.
Nine people died and 16 were injured when a 200-meter stretch of the viaduct collapsed in downtown Zhuzhou, Hunan Province. Twenty-four vehicles were destroyed.
Shen Ping, Zhuzhou's construction director, Zeng Jianhua, general engineer of Zhuzhou's construction bureau, and project manager Ding Wei have been sacked for lack of supervision during the demolition of the viaduct.
Of the nine suspects arrested, an unlicensed individual, identified as Cheng Ji'ang, was reported to have won the sub-contract via a Hunan-based company to demolish the viaduct.
The general manager of the Hunan-based company, his deputy, three supervisors as well as Cheng and his teammates were all reported to have been arrested yesterday.
The families of the victims of the collapse have each been paid 200,000 yuan (US$29,200) compensation by the local government.
A bus driver has been given a 10,000 yuan reward by his company for saving his passengers just before the collapse.
The driver, Li, who was driving the No. 41 bus, spotted the viaduct shaking and quickly ordered his passengers to get off the bus.
The viaduct, opened in 1995, was being demolished to relieve traffic congestion.
