3 people charged with illegal fundraising for deaf charities
THE three leaders of a gang that cheated money from the public by claiming to be collecting for charity were charged with illegal fundraising at Chaoyang District People’s Court in Beijing on Thursday.
Wang Zhigang, Yu Dongdong and Zhang Zhiguo operated a gang of people — who like themselves were deaf — to collect money at Beijing Capital International Airport.
The bosses used the Internet to recruit the collectors. They lured fellow deaf people to Beijing with the offer of jobs, but once in the capital, the recruits were robbed of their identity cards and disabled persons’ certificates, and threatened with violence if they refused to take part in the scam.
While working, the fundraisers carried fake documents describing the charities they claimed to represent and gave gifts to people who made donations, Beijing Times reported yesterday.
Each person was expected to collect 2,000 yuan (US$320.67) per day, of which they received 20-30 yuan to cover their basic living costs, according to the report.
According to the prosecution, Wang and Yu, both of whom are in their 30s, forced more than 20 deaf people to work for them between 2012 and 2013.
Police were alerted to their activities after nine gang members were arrested following a dispute at the airport last September.
In court, the pair denied using violence against the collectors and said they had held their ID and disability cards only for safekeeping.
They said they planned to use the proceeds from the fundraising to establish a company to help deaf people.
The three ringleaders are expected to receive prison terms of one to two years, though the court has yet to rule. Thirteen other group members were given criminal detentions.
