3 siblings drown in Jiangxi

THREE siblings drowned in a pond in Jiangxi Province while no one was supervising them, shining a spotlight on so-called left-behind children once again.

The two brothers, 10 and 5 years old, and their 9-year-old sister were being cared for by their grandparents, one bed-ridden, as their parents work in neighboring Guangdong Province, Jiangxi Daily reported today.

The youngest boy's body was seen floating in a pond yesterday afternoon. Their uncle, Luo Shujin, heard of the incident and rushed to the scene. He suspected the other two children may also have drowned and found their bodies at the bottom of the pond, the report said.

The pond is small but deep, but local authorities never erected any warning signs even though others had drowned there in the past, Luo was cited as saying.

Police told the newspaper the children drowned while playing in the water.
