3 teenagers held over philanthropist's death
THREE teenagers were seized by police in Guangdong Province's Huizhou City for allegedly killing Xing Dan, a young female philanthropist, by throwing rocks at her moving vehicle.
Police said on Saturday that the teenagers, aged 15, 17 and 19, were throwing rocks at passing vehicles along an expressway "for fun."
The teenagers are all from a nearby village and officers have ruled out the possibility of murder or robbery.
Xing, who worked in the education bureau of Shenzhen City before she died, had continued doing the charitable work started by her husband Cong Fei, a singer who donated 3 million yuan (US$459,350) to 170 impoverished people before cancer took his life in 2006.
She sent computers and tuition fees to poverty-stricken children in southwest China's Guizhou Province, and lobbied all over the country for people to make charitable donations.
Xing's six-year-old daughter will be cared for by her grandparents, local media said.
Xing was pronounced dead in hospital on Thursday after a fist-sized rock smashed through the window of the moving vehicle and hit her in the forehead, according to her driver.
Her car was driving at a speed between 80 and 90 kilometers per hour, police said.
Xing had wanted to donate her cornea, but her will was not executed because her body was kept by police for autopsy.
Doctors were unable to access her body within the 12 hours needed to remove the cornea for transplant.
