313 staff at NBS told to pay back US$493,000
HUNDREDS of people employed by the country’s statistics bureau have been found guilty of using their positions for personal gain, including collecting fees for providing information and other services, the Party’s anti-graft watchdog said yesterday.
The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said in a lengthy report that 313 employees at units controlled by the National Bureau of Statistics had been asked to return more than 3.2 million yuan (US$493,000) in fees for the irregular provision of data services.
The NBS republished the commission’s report on its official website.
The commission also found problems with purchase contracts for mobile data collection devices.
One of the issues involved the inclusion of more than 600,000 yuan worth of training fees in an equipment purchase contract, it said.
The former head of the NBS, Wang Bao’an, was sacked in January after authorities announced an anti-corruption investigation.
Over the past few months, the bureau has delayed the public release of data including power generation, base metals production and quarter-on-quarter GDP growth for the first quarter of this year.
