32 million yuan syphoned from 3 bank accounts

THREE bank customers in Handan City, Hebei Province, are seeking answers after their accounts were emptied of more than 32 million yuan (US$5.1 million).

The three people said they deposited 32.75 million yuan in the Hebei-based Bank of Xingtai on the advice of a man surnamed Li, Chinanews reported.

The unnamed customers said Li offered them an annual interest rate of 24 percent, which he had agreed with the bank’s sales and marketing director, surnamed Liu.

However, in February, the three people discovered that all of their money had been withdrawn from the accounts via an online transaction. They said they had not applied for online banking.

A clerk with the bank said that online banking can be authorized only in the presence of the account holder. He also said that he didn’t know if there was a manager surnamed Liu at the bank.

Police did not release any further details of the case but said they have a great deal of evidence and hope to resolve it soon.
