32 nabbed in nationwide swill oil crackdown

POLICE have arrested 32 suspects for allegedly producing and selling swill oil – used cooking oil scooped from eateries' drains and reprocessed into edible oil.

The network which covered the production, distribution and sale of the tainted oil in 14 provinces including Zhejiang, Shandong and Henan provinces was busted by police during a four-month campaign against the use of swill oil, the Ministry of Public Security said on its website today.

Six underground factories were sealed and over 100 tons of swill oil were confiscated.

Liu Liguo, a major suspect, had purchased kitchen waste from Zhejiang, Sichuan and Guizhou provinces and other regions by claiming to make biodiesel since 2009, police said.

According to another suspect surnamed Yuan, she bought the swill oil and resold them to food wholesale markets to make profit.

Swill oil is a potential carcinogenic.
