32 people hurt as Hangzhou bus catches fire
THIRTY-TWO passengers were injured after a bus caught fire yesterday afternoon in Hangzhou, capital of east China’s Zhejiang Province.
The fire broke out about 5pm when the bus with about 80 people aboard was traveling along Qingchun Road in the city’s downtown area.
The injured, at least 24 of whom were said to be in a serious condition, were taken to three hospitals, the city health bureau said.
No fatalities have been reported, but doctors did resuscitate one person who suffered cardiac arrest.
Police are investigating the fire, but as yet “have found no evidence to suggest it was related to terrorism,” a source with the local public security bureau said.
Witness Zhou Dabo, who was on a different bus nearby, said the ill-fated No. 7 bus pulled up soon after smoke began billowing from it.
Other drivers who saw what happened began trying to douse the flames with extinguishers, he said.
“When the front door of the bus opened people began to pile out, while others smashed the windows to escape,” said another witness surnamed Xie.
“Quite a few of them looked like they were badly hurt,” he said.
One of the injured passengers said a dispute broke out before the blaze.
“People were arguing at the back of the bus and then the blaze started,” said the person who is receiving treatment at the Hangzhou No. 1 People’s Hospital.
