32 terrorists jailed in Xinjiang
COURTS in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region sentenced 32 people to prison terms of between four years and life for spreading terror-related messages and organizing terrorist groups.
The verdicts were handed down in 11 cases handled by courts in the seven cities and prefectures of Urumqi, Aksu, Kizilsu Kirgiz, Ili, Hotan, Turpan and Bortala on Thursday.
Of those convicted, three were given life sentences, while 29 were sent to prison for between four and 15 years, the regional publicity department said yesterday.
They were all found guilty of using cellphones and the Internet to store, download and spread messages of religious extremism and terror in audio and video formats, the department said in a press release.
The 32 were convicted of using the materials to lead and organize terrorist groups, illegally make explosives, instigate ethnic hatred and discrimination, and teach criminal methods, it said.
Last month, authorities in Xinjiang executed 13 people and sent more than 100 to prison in a public mass sentencing related mostly to terrorism offenses.
The regional government in May launched a yearlong campaign in the wake of a string of deadly attacks, including one at an open market in the regional capital of Urumqi on May 22 that left 39 people dead.
To guard against terrorist attacks, police nationwide have beefed up armed patrols.
Terrorist attacks have also spread to other parts of China. An incident on October 28 near Tian’anmen Square in Beijing left five dead and dozens injured, while 29 people were killed in an attack at a train station in Kunming on March 1.
