33 detained over deadly landslide in Shenzhen

AUTHORITIES in Shenzhen said yesterday that 33 people have been placed under “coercive measures” — a term that generally means detention — for their alleged roles in last month’s landslide in the city that caused the deaths of at least 69 people.

Police are still searching for three others wanted in connection with the incident, the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau said in a statement, adding that 16 of the 33 detained have been formally arrested.

The fugitives were named as Long Renfu, Wang Minghui and Lin Xixiao, the statement said, though it did not identify any of the people who have been detained.

Anyone with information about the three suspects should call Shenzhen police on 0755-110, the statement said, adding that the fugitives are encouraged to hand themselves in.

“Those suspects who turn themselves in to the public security authority, the procuratorate, the court, prison, or other related department before February 1, 2016 will receive a lenient punishment,” it said.

Among the 16 people arrested are a legal representative and deputy general manager of the company that managed the waste dump, and executives of companies that used it.

A mountain of construction waste collapsed on December 20 destroying 33 buildings at the Hengtaiyu industrial zone in Shenzhen’s Guangming New District.

As of Thursday, 69 bodies had been recovered from the debris, but eight people were still missing. The State Council earlier deemed the tragedy a work safety incident.
