34 gangsters sentenced, 8 to death

A CHINESE court yesterday sentenced 34 gang members for violent crime, including murder, amid a large-scale crackdown on organized crime in the southwestern city of Chongqing.
The Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court sentenced two of them to death. Six others received death with a two-year reprieve. The other 26 members received jail terms ranging from 10 months to life imprisonment.
Ringleader Gong Gangmo was given life imprisonment after being convicted on nine counts, including running a gang, murder, and drug trafficking.
Another gang leader, Fan Qihang, and its chief member, Wu Chuanjiang, were sentenced to death for similar convictions.
