35 college exam cheats uncovered in Henan probe

THE Ministry of Education has found 35 people involved in cheating in this year’s college entrance exam in central China’s Henan Province, amid a nationwide check following a series of scandals.

Among the 35 uncovered, 10 are candidates and 11 are exam sitters, including university students and graduates.

As punishments, candidates can’t take the exam within three years and exam sitters are expelled from their universities.

Others involved, including middlemen, teachers and officials, will either be dismissed from their posts or transferred to police and prosecutors for involvement in bribery or dereliction of duty, a spokeswoman said yesterday.

The scam was revealed by China Central Television on June 17.

Local rich and powerful families in small counties were reported to have paid university students to sit the college entrance exam for their children.

Police, education officials and exam supervisors were reported to have conspired with the parents.

Earlier, Henan authorities said they had found nearly 130 exam sitters. They were recruited through messages written on toilet walls at several campuses in neighboring Hubei Province.

Another prominent scam was exposed in northeast China’s Liaoning Province. In late June, there were online reports that 87 students from Benxi Senior Middle School were awarded national-class athletics certificates, entitling them to 10 extra points in the examination.

The number was considered as abnormally high as it was just two less than the total awarded to students in five other Liaoning cities combined.

It emerged that the certificates could be bought for between 40,000 (US$6,400) and 80,000 yuan, according to the Henan Business News.

Officials said at the weekend that 270 out of 1,072 students across the province have returned the awards.
