36 punished over college exam cheating

Thirty-six people have been punished over cheating in last month’s college entrance exam in Nanchang, capital of central China’s Jiangxi Province, while six alleged organizers are under investigation, education authorities said yesterday.

They included students, teachers at Jiangxi Tourism and Commerce Vocational College and local education officials.

Students and graduates from outside the province had been recruited to sit the exam for others, authorities said.

Fu Wujun and Deng Ming, director and vice director of Qingyunpu District’s exam administration were expelled from the Party and sacked for taking bribes and dereliction of duty.

Xu Yong, director of enrolment at the college’s continuing education center, was sacked for making official school seals without authorization and offering bribes to other officials to take part in the scheme.

Chen Jianpeng, director of Donghu District’s examination administration, was expelled from the Party and sacked for dereliction of duty and taking bribes.

Another 18 officials from local education departments or the college were sacked, demoted or are subject to Party discipline or administrative warnings depending on the level of their involvement.

Seven students who should have taken the exam have been banned from taking any national exams for three years.

The seven people hired to take it in their place are also banned from taking part in any national tests for three years.
