37 pupils injured as new school bus hits heavy truck

THIRTY-SEVEN pupils were injured after a school bus and a heavy truck crashed yesterday morning in Foshan City, south China's Guangdong Province.

The students were sent to hospitals for treatment and one of them was in intensive care for brain injuries, New Express Daily reported today.

No overloading is suspected as the school bus, which was designed to carry 69 people, had 61 onboard. The bus, which belongs to the private Yinglin Shuiteng Primary School, was bought at the beginning of this semester, the school headmaster surnamed Zhang told the newspaper.

A large dent was left on left side of the bus, the bumper bar was bent and at least four windows were shattered from the huge impact of the collision, the report said.

Police are still investigating the accident. Witnesses said the truck may have driven too fast, but the police could not confirm this.
