37 suspects escape police custody in Yunnan
YUNNAN Province police confirmed the escape of 37 offenders and suspects from a detention center in Zhengxiong County but refused to give details, local media reported today.
An anonymous insider said the 37 detainees ran out suddenly when police led them to an open ground for morning excise on April 6. Only two detainees stayed behind, according to the Yunnan Information Daily.
The insider said the detention center has three sets of gates which did not seem locked at the time. Only three guards were on duty when the jailbreak took place, the paper reported.
Most of the detainees were drug addicts or suspects under investigation, the report said.
Police admitted the mass escape but didn't mention their follow-up action nor confirm an online claim that a dozen escapees had been caught.
