39 hurt in rally over waste plant

AT least 10 protestors and 29 police officers were injured yesterday during clashes at a rally against a plan to build a waste incinerator in east China’s Hangzhou city, capital of Zhejiang Province, authorities said.

A protestor and a police officer were seriously injured, though neither is critical.

Rally participants set fire to two police cars and damaged or overturned more than 30 other vehicles, officials said. About 700 officers were dispatched to the scene in Zhongtai Township, Yuhang District, where the plant is scheduled to be built.

The protest forced the highway linking Hangzhou and Huizhou in Anhui Province to close for 90 minutes.

Local people believe the facility — the site of which was made public in April — will be  a health hazard and create pollution.

“We don’t want our children and grandchildren to get cancer,” a Weibo user said in a post.

In March, hundreds of people in the southern city of Maoming protested against plans to build a petrochemical plant out of fear it would contribute to pollution.

About 90,000 “mass incidents” occur annually in China, according to a report by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
