3D modeling to be used in civil engineering construction
CUTTING-EDGE 3D modeling technology will be widely used to improve the construction efficiency and safety of civil engineering projects across China.
The nation's five major civil engineering design and planning institutes signed a contract with Dassault Systems, a world leader in 3D design and modeling, in Shanghai over the weekend to establish a building information modeling (BIM) alliance and to promote the technology on domestic civil engineering construction.
The intelligent model-based process can display the building structure in three dimensions with detailed information such as height and even the diameter of water pipes.
Many of major construction projects in Shanghai have initially used the BIM technology in recent years such as the Shanghai Tower and Yanggao Road S. Tunnel, but most roads, bridges and tunnels in the country were still designed with traditional charts.
The Dassault Systems will supply technology and share experiences on the civil engineering designing to the Yangtze River Institute of Survey, Planning, Design and Research, Yellow River Engineering Consulting Co. as well as the design and planning institutes for northwest China, Chengdu in central Sichuan Province and Guiyang in Guizhou Province.
The BIM technology will be firstly applied to the hydropower projects and promoted to the planning and constructions for roads, tunnels and bridges, said Ma Yuesheng, deputy general manager with the Yellow River Engineering Consulting Co.
